comparison of the skeletal and dental changes of tooth-borne vs.bone-borne expansion devices in surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion: a finite element study
نویسندگان
چکیده
background: the aim of this study was to compare the skeletal and dental changes of a toothborne (hyrax) and a bone-borne (smile distractor) expansion devices using three-dimensional model of a human skull. materials and methods: a finite element model of human skull was generated using data from 3-d ct scans of an 11-year-old female child. then a hyrax expander (tooth-borne appliance) and smile distractor (bone-borne appliance) in three different positions were adapted to the finite element model and expanded for 0.5 mm simulating the clinical situation. the 3-d pattern of displacement and stress distribution was then analyzed. results: the results of this study showed that screw position affects the stress and displacement pattern within the nasomaxillary complex and maxillary dental arch. conclusion: closer teeth feel more stress and undergo more displacement than the farther ones. moreover, skeletal effects of the smile distractor were greater than of hyrax in all different positions. key words: dental, expansion device, finite element method, skeletal

متن کاملEffect of Bone Borne Expansion and Tooth Borne Palatal Expansion on Airway Volume: A Review Article
Background and purpose: Transverse problems in the maxilla (high arched- narrow hard plates) can cause respiratory disorders. Palatal expansion can be helpful in this way. The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of bone borne expansion and tooth borne palatal expansion on airway volume. Materials and methods: A review study was performed by search in Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, Em...
متن کاملSkeletal and dental changes following surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the changes produced by surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) longitudinally on 14 patients aged between 18 and 41 years. A pre-fabricated Hyrax appliance was cemented prior to the surgical intervention, which consisted of a maxillary buccal corticotomy with pterygoid separation. Models and postero-anterior (PA) headfilms were taken before ...
متن کاملMaxillary changes with bone-borne surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion: A prospective study.
INTRODUCTION The aim of this prospective study was to analyze the postexpansion positional changes of the maxillary halves and their initial stability after transpalatal distraction with a bone-borne distractor and standard corticotomies of the anterior, lateral, and median bony supports of the maxilla without pterygomaxillary disjunction. METHODS The sample consisted of 21 patients (15 femal...

o bjectives: the aim of this study was to investigate the displacement and stress distri- bution during surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion under different surgical conditions with tooth- and bone-borne devices. materials and methods: three-dimensional (3d) finite element model of a maxilla was constructed and an expansion force of 100 n was applied to the left and right molars and pr...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Three Types of Rapid Maxillary Expansion Devices in Surgically Assisted Maxillary Expansion: A Finite Element Study
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to analyze the displacement pattern and stress distribution during surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (RME) with three different types of RME devices by constructing a finite element model. MATERIALS AND METHODS A finite element model is constructed from the computerized tomography scans. According to the type of RME device, 3 groups were simula...
